Our work with Mahali Lab has shown how human-centered design approaches and skills can be useful for work in the social sector. But working with economically and socially vulnerable communities has a unique set of considerations. Designers working in the social sector must learn new methods and ethics for working with vulnerable communities.
How to support designers transitioning into the social sector
In December 2018, the IRC held a workshop in Lebanon to help experienced designers translate their skills to the social sector. We found that designers had three main considerations:
- Structure and language of the social sector
- Methods and ethics of work with vulnerable communities; and
- The role of a designer in the social sector
